A Pilot Fights Back After Firing

According to a Bloomberg article, a little over two years ago, Captain Kenny Edwards refused to fly a Continental Airlines commuter flight - operated by Gulfstream International Airlines - from Tampa to West Palm Beach. The planes collision avoidance system was broken. So was the pressurization system. This meant the plane would have to flow at low altitude. Between Tampa and West Palm Beach, once he left the airport area, there would be a large number of light airplanes fling that were not controlled by air traffic control.

Gulfstream fired him, and he filed a complaint with the FAA. Usually the pilot ends up with the short end of the stick, but while investigating this case the FAA said they discovered a number of regulations Gulfstream had violated and imposed a $1.3 million fine.

The article also says new FAA regulations regarding pilot flight hours which were supposed to be in place by Dec. 31 are now slated for sometime in 2010.

    The Strength To Fly

We all know that when a supportive person is with us, it helps. Though psychologists are well aware of it, the public may not be: the emotional strength we have inside us is based on replicas of actual good relationships. To maximize the bearing a good relationship has on a challenge, we use the "Strengthening Exercise" to link the challenging moments of a flight directly to memory of an important moment with a person we have, or had, a good relationship with.

The following email notes how, after the loss of supportive people, flying became difficult. But, by directly connecting the challenging moments of flight to memory of the supportive people, the ability to fly returned even stronger.

    Dear Captain Tom,

Thank you for the very insightful newsletter.  I signed up for your course a few months ago after briefly speaking with you on the phone.  As I mentioned, I have flown 4-5 times per year for about 10 years and found my anxiety slowly, but surely growing.  After the loss of a number of people close to me earlier this year, something changed, and I found my anxiety had quickly grown to a point such that I no longer wanted to fly. I decided to take your course, but didn't have great expectations.

To my pleasant surprise, the course worked just as well as you predicted it would during our conversation.  I took the course immediately before a sequence of two trips, including a total of about 10 different legs and over 20 hours of flying...I felt very relaxed!  Even the turbulence barely seemed to bother me.

Beyond flying in general, your course has provided me with great insights into my own basic psychology.  So, even though I am "cured" of my fear of flying, I continue to enjoy your updates.  I really appreciate all that your course has done for me and wish you great success!
