    Patrick Tackles Fear Of Turbulence

Patrick writes, "About 60 people, two-thirds of them flight attendants, are
injured by turbulence annually in the United States. That works out to
about 20 passengers. Twenty out of the 800 million or so who fly each
year in this country. Repeat: 20 out of 800 million. (Despite such
numbers, turbulence remains the No. 1 concern of anxious fliers.)"

    Patrick
is right. Stats won't help. Why? Three things. First, even if injury happens rarely and only to a person not wearing a seat belt, an anxious person still says, "It could happen on my flight, and it would be frightening."

So though there is no physical danger, the anxious flier sees emotional danger - being frightened. They just don't want something to happen that makes them afraid even if they know it is safe. It's like an amusement park ride. It doesn't matter that the ride is physically safe, because it is frightening. That makes it "emotionally unsafe".

And finally, the strategy many people use when
flying is to keep everything about the flight out of mind. That
works until there is turbulence. Turbulence intrudes, and make it impossible for the person to keep the flight out of mind. Turbulence makes the strategy fail. If the person has no other way of staving off anxiety, high
    anxiety or panic results.

    The
answer is to increase emotional strength so you can fly without
pretending to be elsewhere. And for people who already have the SOAR
materials and are still troubled by turbulence, you need to give up pretending you are not on a plane
when you are. Redo the strengthening exercise including everything that is normal on the flight, including turbulence. Give
up trying to ignore it. Pay attention to turbulence. Note the movements.

Read this article. This is the key to
    getting used to turbulence.

Pilots Use The  Toilet When The Seat Belt Sign Is On

That's when the toilet is free. Though I would not try the rear toilet in turbulence, the toilet in the front of the place is rarely hard to use during turbulence. A newsletter subscriber send this email.

There was some turbulence and I actually laughed because as soon as the fasten seat belt sign came on, who should walk out of the cockpit and into the restroom but the pilot!  Then he and the flight attendant stood around talking while the plane was (seemingly, though my bottle of water told me otherwise) bouncing around as if they were on solid ground.

Other than a brief thought that I wished he were in the cockpit in case anything really did go wrong, I actually found the whole thing pretty amusing thinking about your tapes and actually seeing first hand how you were right on about what the pilots do and think during turbulence.

Anyway, as always, thank you for your program, your frequent updates, and your kindness and understanding. I know so many people tell you this, but let me also say again that you have made a huge difference in my life!

    A "Smashing Success"

    Hi Tom,

Yesterday I took my very first plane trip (from southern CA to northern CA) and, thanks to you and your program, it was a smashing success.  Maybe smashing isn't the best choice of words for this!

I used your technique before boarding and it got me to walk (although zombie like) onto the plane.  Once the plane took off, I was amazed how well I felt.  I only needed the in-flight technique once.  I even sat by the window and watched it all...take off, mid flight and landing and was fine!

What helped me most of all was all your logic about how safe planes are today.  I knew nothing of all the backup systems and how accidents beget corrections so they don't happen again, etc.  And your answering personal questions really helped immensely.

I honestly don't believe I could have done this without you.  I am 60 years old and had no intention of ever flying.  Now a whole new world has been opened up to me.

I just got off the phone with my daughter and we are planning a flying trip together.  I am amazed.

I must also add that I am claustrophobic, but being next to the window helped a lot, rather than trying to pretend I was on a bus as a friend recommended.

And the slight turbulence I felt didn't phase me because of your assurance that planes are built for turbulence, and that inspecting a plane after turbulence will reveal no signs of damage because they are made for this.

Thank you, more than words can say,

A Good Article On How The Brain And Stress

Research shows that chronic stress reduces the brain's "executive function" ability. But a short vacation from stress helps bring this ability back to normal. See this link.
