The Same Reminder

If you read about a crash at a race track, it doesn't make you fearful to drive your car. You recognize there is a difference. But each time there is any kind of plane crash, I get emails that the news of the crash has caused a setback.

Here is an example: "I came in today, put the news on and noted two awful plane crashes.
Now after all the hard work I've put in, I feel I'm falling apart."

Emotions make it harder to use reflective function, the mental activity that involves thinking about thinking, and making sure thinking is being done accurately. For some, the very words "plane crash" freezes the ability to think.

It will help to get one step ahead. Establish now what kind of flying is irrelevant. It comes down to this: is the air operation that you are reading about one you would - by any stretch of the imagination - be a passenger on?

Rule out the following:

  • all private airplanes

  • all business and corporate airplanes

  • all military airplanes

  • all helicopters

  • all airlines you never heard of before

  • all airlines you have never bought a ticket on

  • all airlines other than the major airlines you routinely consider when making plans

  • all charter flights other than charters by major airlines you routinely consider when making plans

  • all flights in parts of the world you do not routinely fly in

Regarding the email that caused the person to feel out of control: one crash was a single-engine plane. No airline operations involve single-engine planes. The crash of a single-engine plane has nothing to do with your airline flying whatsoever. Yes, it was carrying people, but that still does not make it an airline flight. And, it simply was not an airline. There is no connection.

The other crash was a FEDEX cargo plane. You may put your package on FEDEX but you are not going to put yourself on FEDEX. Cargo flights are not as safe as passenger flights. The regulations for cargo flights are different. The planes are much more heavily loaded.

Are these differences hard to recognize? A rose is a rose is a rose, but a single-engine plane is never an airliner, and FEDEX has no planes that you would ever be a passenger on.

A single-engine plane crash? Not relevant. A FEDEX crash? Not relevant. MD-11? Even if it turns out there is a problem with the MD-11, it is not likely you will ever be on one. Only KLM or Finnair fly passengers on MD-11s.

First Flight In Twenty Years

Hi Tom,

I flew to Puerto Rico last week and returned last night. That was my first time flying in over 20 years and it was fantastic.  American Airlines was wonderful in Business Class, the flights were perfectly smooth and we arrived 45 minutes early last night at Kennedy!!!

Thanks for all your help!

On And Off For Twenty-five Years

Dear Capt. Tom,

I just had to write and say thank you for your SOAR program.  I have been an on again off again flyer for 25 years. I started your program in August and not only has it helped with my flying but it has helped with my life in general. We just returned today from taking our daughter to Disney World for a long week-end and the flights both ways were great. I was completely relaxed and I think its because for the last few months I have been living my life in a "what is" frame of mind and not a "what if". I deal in the here and now and that keeps my imagination in check. I am looking forward to my next flight in May.

Thank you,

Patrick's Column This Week

Imagine you're an airline captain. You've been with the same company for 20 years, and you're making a respectable if not spectacular six-figure salary. Then one day this airline goes bankrupt and closes its doors.  You apply for a position at one of its competitors. Lo and behold, you're hired. Back to normal, right?

Not quite. . . . . you will not be hired on as a captain, and you certainly will not be bringing in anything close to your most recent salary.  A third of that is more like it, if you're lucky.

There are no exceptions. Not even if your name is, say, Chesley Sullenberger. You can read Patrick's column at this link.
