How Safe Is Flying Now?

Solid research says that every time you drive 10.8 miles on an Interstate highway, you encounter the same risk as taking a flight (length of flight doesn't matter).  2462 divided by 10.8 equals 228. So that is 228 trips by car versus 1 trip by plane

777 Advisory

This applies only to 777-200 and 777-300 with Rolls-Royce engines on extremely long flights.

You may remember the accident at London's Heathrow airport a few months ago when a BA 777-200 landed just short of the runway due to partial loss of engine power.

It has been determined that the partial loss of power was due to clogging of a device (fuel/oil heat exchanger) through which fuel flows to the engines. There are always some water molecules suspended in the jet fuel. Ordinarily, this does not cause any trouble at all. But on the extremely long flights the 777-200 can make, exposure to very cold temperatures - particularly on flights near the North Pole - can cool the fuel enough so that particles of ice form and collect in the device in the fuel lines. After the ice forms, changes in engine power can cause the ice to be dislodged. The dislodged ice may then move to the unit that controls engine power.

Procedures have been adopted which may take care of the problem. However, the National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) is not satisfied with procedures alone, as reported at this link.

The NTSB wants a fix of the problem. However, it is expected that it will take eighteen months to redesign and replace the questionable units. The National Transport Safety Board has stated: " . . . until the current fuel/oil heat exchangers are replaced by heat exchangers more tolerant to ice accretion, additional failures to achieve commanded thrust could occur and could result in a serious accident and, possibly, injuries and deaths."

The NTSB did not specifically say that long flights on the 777 should not be done until the situation is corrected. But, I think they are saying as close to that as they can without upsetting politics between the U.S. and Great Britain.

What I suggest is the following: if you are planning an extremely long trip for which a fifteen to eighteen-hour non-stop flight is offered, don't take the non-stop flight. Instead, break the trip up into flights of a more conventional duration.

BA, Singapore Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Airlines operate 777s with Rolls -Royce engines.

Renewed Faith

Hi Cap'n Tom,

...we each live with a certain level of need for control, reassurance, and escape...and these unsettling times can easy make us wonder "if we can't control our jobs, our savings, our futures, how are we going to control our feelings in a situation we've felt panic during in the past like airports or on planes".  Well - we can.  You've taught us that we can.  But we sometimes lose our faith that we can.

I offer you a phrase I saw on a church marquee this month. I wrote it down and have it posted now above my computer. "Faith is the ability to not panic". Yes. They have it exactly right. And now, going through the market changes and panicked reactions across the U.S. and the world, I look up at the planes overhead and feel resentment and jealousy - I'm mad that I CAN'T go on vacation because we need to save up money "just in case" the economy turns worse. I want to be that person in the air leaving that awesome trail in the sky...but just now the priority is watching finances...every penny counts.

I have faith though - faith that I will again be up there flying to my dream destination and taking that well deserved vacation.  I also know that if I lose my faith...if I stop putting in to my 401K out of panic of the market, if I cancel another vacation because the unemployment rate went up, or if I actually do get to travel and I have anxiety in flight then it's OK. I am not perfect, but it's in the trying that I get stronger, and my faith will keep me trying.

Thanks for continually renewing my faith

"I Hope My Words Will Help Others"

A  religious person may feel like a failure when their faith does not conquer fear of flying. In my view, shallow religion is a "deal" with God, hoping to strike
a bargain for personal gain, wealth, fame, winning a game, or
protection against a plane crash.

One of the most despicable bumper stickers I've ever seen is "God Made
Notre Dame Number One" (Apparently, this year, God didn't see fit to
have Notre Dame even make the top twenty-five.).

Deeper religion is not about personal gain. It is not even about personal protection. Deeper religion is about ones place in the universe and the sea of connections in which we live. It is not about protection from a crash - but the protection of not being alone during such an event.

Recent brain scan research shows that the brain responds exactly the same to all feelings of connection, whether to God or to a person or both. To my way of thinking, religion often needs to be brought down from the heavens and brought home to one-to-one connections with people. It may be that the deepest religious experience is the experience of another person. And, even the most religious person may need to connect flying to a powerful moment of connection with a person.

That said, the following email is from a minister.

Capt. Tom

For 56 years I have avoided flying. I have had severe panic attacks since I
was 17 years old. People would offer to fly me to meetings and sometimes just to
enjoy their plane. A mother-in-law with cancer in another country was what
motivated me to look for help. I cannot tell you the thousands upon thousands of
miles I have driven across this country just to avoid one of my many fears. Your
course cured me! And not only that, it has helped my panic attacks by applying
the same principles to my other fears. I have flown seven times this past year
and actually look forward flying. Thank you for your life changing help.

I hope my words might help others. I am a minister and I tell folks of your
site when ever I hear "I am afraid to fly" O by the way you can use my full name
if you would like.

God bless you Tom

Pastor Chuck

 Fear Of Flying Dreams

According to Dr. Michael Breus, everyone finds it hard to shake off waking up from a dream of being in a plane crash. It means nothing about the future. It only means you went to bed anxious. If a person has an upcoming flight and is anxious, that anxiety primes the mind to produce the frightening dream. See this link.
