Even "Take Me Along" May Suffice

Some clients have said if they could take me along with them on their flight, they know they would do fine. I'm sure it would help, but it is not a cure. To cure fear of flying, the changes must be internal, not external.

Some "external" things can help. For example, "Take Me Along" can help. It is a set of eight MP3 audio clips or eight MP4 video tracks that can be used during the flight to let me coach people through the flight, telling them what the noises are and - in video - showing what causes the noises as well as what is happening in the cockpit.

"Take Me Along" is not a substitute for the SOAR Course. But in these tough times, if you must fly and expenses make the SOAR Course an impossibility, by all means get "Take Me Along". It is only around $60.00 in video and $30.00 in audio. Here is what one person said:

Just a note to let you know, that I just returned from my trip to Disney with my family, and the flight was a complete non factor, thanks to your take me along version of "fear of flying." I didn't have the money to buy the whole set, so I figured I would try just the "take me along" version, and it worked perfectly.

My fear was turbulence. I always feared that the plane would just fall out of the sky, especially since we had a real bad experience on our honeymoon with clear air turbulence. But, just the "take me along" version of fear of flying got me totally past that fear!!

I actually spread the word to my wife as well, who was also afraid to fly, that is until now!! I know you would like it if everyone bought the full version, but I have to tell you, the "Take Me Along" was all I needed!!

Feel free to use this as a testimonial, but I just wanted to say thank you for helping me get back in the sky again!!

Genetics, Nurture, And Sensitivity To Stress

We tend to think of our genetics as fixed. Though we can't change the set of genes we have, it is now known that some genes can be switch on or switched off. If something causes a gene to switch on or off, there can be a different physical result.

Switching can be triggered by something we are exposed to. For example, a substance in food or in the environment may cause a gene to switch. Switched one way, the gene leads to a certain type of cancer, but switched another way there is immunity to the cancer.

Animal research has shown that some genes can be switched even by nurture or by lack of nurture. According to the research, better nurturing by an animal mother can cause a genetic switch that makes her offspring better able to deal with stress.

Further, the offspring who, because of the better nurturing, are better able to deal with stress, pass on genetics differences to their offspring which cause their offspring to also be better able to deal with stress.

New research shows that nurture also plays a genetic role in humans. When people are under stress, cortisol is produced that revs up the body. Some people have genes that allow the brain to adapt to high cortisol by producing receptors to absorb the cortisol. In other people, their genes do not allow the brain to adapt.

According to new research with humans, just as with animals, nurture helps to determine whether the genes will cause the brain to adapt - or not to adapt - to handle stress hormones. The new research shows that children who had profoundly poor nurturing - having been abused - are genetically less able to produce the receptors to absorb cortisol, and thus are less able to deal with stress.

We have long known that children who are abused or neglected have a higher risk of anxiety and depression as adults. The research is now suggesting that the higher risk is due to biological changes in the brain resulting from the quality of care during childhood.

An article on this is in the New York Times at this link.

A scholarly report on the research can be found in Nature Neuroscience at this link.

Though a bad flight can appear to be the cause of a problem with
flying, consider that others on the same flight may not have developed
fear of flying. Sensitivity to stress develops both genetically and directly
through less than optimal nurture. Fortunately, we can use the
Strengthening Exercise to find a moment which is profoundly nurturing
and use that moment to help rebuild the emotional strength needed for
flying.  This is why SOAR works.

"I Decided To Be The Person That Goes Back To Reading"

In the SOAR Course, we present something we call "Going Into Your Own Movie". In this, we suggest that when hearing a noise, some passengers say, "What's that?" Then, recognizing they don't know, go back to reading, or whatever they were doing before the noise.

An anxious passenger says, What's that? And, instead of recognizing they don't know, make something up, such as, "Oh my God! Something snapped and the plane is breaking and going to plunge!"

What we do with the Strengthening Exercise is give you an automatic way to not do that.

The following is a great email on how to deal with flying.

If you were standing here i would give you an enormous
hug!!!  Not a single problem encountered on my first flight in nineteen
years. Flight attendants were shocked that I was a fearful flyer. I
took the lowest dose possible of Ativan before heading out for the
airport. I didn't really think I needed it, but decided not to be a
hero and just took the damn thing, just in case.

I kept in mind a
couple of things, the 54321 exercise, and never even needed to go to 4.

Remember reading about anxiety - that when some people hear a noise
(me) it becomes a vision of the plane plummeting. Other people hear it,
don't know what it is and go back to what they were doing.

I heard a noise. I remembered that and I decided to be the person that goes back to reading.

I read. I did a logic puzzle. I listened to my iPod. I slept. I had a
soda. A tiny bit of turbulence. Pictured the plane in layers of jello.

I met the pilot. He told me he loved his job and had three kids. I asked him if he loved his kids too. He said yes. I was good.

I befriended the ticket agent, the loading agent. All were supportive. Return trip just as easy.

I am planning future trips now!!!

THANK YOU for taking all my phone calls...

A Little Humor

Entering heaven a priest dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket and jeans. Saint Peter addresses this cool guy, "Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?

"The guy replies, I'm Peter, retired Delta Air Lines Pilot from Atlanta."

Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the pilot,"Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom. The pilot goes into Heaven with his robe and staff.

Next it's the priest's turn. He stands erect and booms out, "I am Father Bob, pastor of Saint Mary's in Pasadena for the last 43 years."

Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the priest,  "Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom."

"Just a minute," says the good father, "that man was a pilot and he gets a silken robe and golden staff, and I get only cotton and wood staff. How can this be?"

"Up here - - we go by results," says Saint Peter, "when you preached - - people slept; when he flew - people prayed."

If in the mood for a bit more humor, see this link sent by a minister friend.
