Is It Safe To Feel Safe?
Why do we expect the worst? Freud suggested we expect the worst as a way of preventing it from happening. He said the problem with trauma is, that the first time we have one, we never had one before. It comes as if 'out of the blue'. Being a complete surprise, it crushes us.

To avoid feeling crushed like that again, we brace ourselves; we expect awful things. But being braced isn't enough; we want to prevent disaster. So we consider cause and effect. What was happening just before the trauma hit. Maybe that caused the trauma.
Well, what was going on was we were happy, feeling secure, and expecting nothing to go wrong. Maybe being happy, feeling secure, and expecting nothing to go wrong is what caused the trauma. That's another reason for being hypervigilant.
Then, if we stay hypervigilant and no new trauma hits, we easily could get the idea that being unhappy, feeling insecure, and expecting things to go wrong is the key to safety.

My First Flying In Five Years
Dear Capt. Tom,
I had to let you know that I made it through all four of my flights this weekend-- my first time flying in five years!! I met the captain on my first flight out of Boston, and I couldn't believe how relaxed he was. He was more than happy to show me some of the instruments in the cockpit, and answer my questions. In fact, he probably didn't even believe that I have a fear of flying -- I can be pretty good at hiding my fears. Nevertheless, he immediately put me at ease.
The jello analogy also really helped me through some light turbulence. On my fourth and final flight, the seat belt light was on for almost all of our three hour flight -- and it really didn't bother me. I played solitaire on my iPod, and just relaxed. I can't even believe that I can say that now. I RELAXED on an airplane going through turbulence!
Today, my husband and I started planning a cross country trip this summer. It's something we've talked about doing for almost four years, but never did, because it includes a flight from Boston to California. I know I'll be a little nervous before the flight, but man, I can't wait to see California!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I really can't thank you enough. My dad is a retired airplane mechanic and ground support supervisor. He could tell me all about how the safety systems work, how lift works; everything about how airplanes fly. My therapist who helps me with anxiety could tell me all about anticipatory anxiety, panic attacks, calming exercises, and ways to visualize the flight going well. Despite all of this, your SOAR program was what got me back on a plane - and confident enough to know that I can continue to fly with less fear than I ever thought possible.
Thanks once again for your help.
