On Increasing Emotional Strength
Using the Strengthening Exercise, we increase control of emotion when flying by linking each specific moment of flight to a moment of emotional security with a person.
As the flight unfolds, the links inform the amygdala that the incoming data it is looking at is as benign as the moment of emotional security with the person.
Some clients have many such moments, but some have trouble finding even one. Some moments that might be used are problematic, such as moments with a person we had a falling out with, or who has passed away. Until grieving of the loss has been done, recall of that person brings - not emotional strength - but emotional pain. If there is a way to accelerate the grieving process, we can accelerate our building of additional emotional strength.
A good article on grieving is at this link.

How Is Empathy Taught?
Last week I wrote, "Often panic develops because a person has not fully developed an ability to do what is called "Reflective Function" (or "mindfulness", or "being meta to ones self", or "having an observing ego"), and to look inside at ones own mental processes.
One of the leaders of the "mindfulness" movement is Shauna Shapiro, Ph.D. An interview with her is available at this link. She says when training to become a therapist, trainees are told to be empathic but are not taught how. This led her to look for ways to develop empathic connection. She says, "Intentionally cultivating nonjudgmental attention leads to connection, which leads to self-regulation and ultimately to greater order and health. . . . "

Fly By Wire
In an article in Vanity Fair, William Langewieshe attributed the success of the Hudson River landing to the fly-by-wire system on the Airbus. Nothing could be father from the facts as they are known. The fly-by-wire system caused difficulty which almost turned the landing into a tragedy. It would have been far easier to land a conventionally controlled airliner. Some details on that are found at this link.
Langewieshe has followed up his grossly misleading article in Vanity Fair with a somewhat less misleading book, Fly By Wire. I asked him by email, again, why he ignores the fact that the Airbus - because of the fly-by-wire system - contacted the water three times harder than it should, which caused the aft fuselage to fail, let water rush in and endanger the passengers. Though he answered my email this time, I still didn't get a straight answer. Keep in mind that when you read his book or hear this interview. It still is an interesting book, a bit of which can also be found at this link.
For example, Langewieshe writes, " . . . the airplane's flight-control computers had performed remarkably well, seamlessly integrating themselves into Sullenberger's solutions and intervening assertively at the very end to guarantee a survivable touchdown."
The facts are, the computers got in the way, and made it impossible for Sullenberger to "flare" (reduction, just before contact with the water, of the angle at which the plane was gliding down toward to water. The computers gave him a "carrier landing" instead of a proper landing. Imagine the roughest landing you have ever experienced. Double that and you have an approximation of the impact the computers limited Sullenberger to.
As I have pointed out, and Patrick has pointed out, what you read in the media is likely to be misinformation. Often that is because the writer doesn't know much about aviation. But Langewieshe, who is a pilot, does know aviation. Why the misleading information? I don't know. My email asking that specifically was not answered.
