FAA Tries To Get Airlines Back Into Safety Program

Several airlines have opted out of a safety program which, for years, has been regarded as a great success. But the airlines say they want changes so they can punish pilots for what they call willful and intentional safety violations. It escapes me how airline management thinks a professional pilot would willfully violate a safety regulation because there is no advantage for a pilot doing so.

But since there is an advantage when management violates federal regulations, perhaps management people think pilot, too, spend as much time as management types do at figuring ways around regulations.

Every pilot knows it doesn't take an enforcement officer to enforce safety; gravity will do it. Though management may play a game of cat and mouse with regulators, pilots know there is no way to keep anything secret from gravity. We don't willfully violate the law of  gravity because gravity provides its own enforcement.

Airlines Sue To Stop FAA Pilot Fatigue Protection

Pilot fatigue is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, threat to airline safety. Before deregulation, unions were fairly successful in negotiating agreements which protected pilots against extreme fatigue. But deregulation changed that. As new airlines sprang up with no unions, and no retirement to pay for, the legacy airlines were under pressure to compete. Pilot unions were forced to relinquish these protections.

Yet, at unionized airlines, pilots were able to deal with the problem by calling in sick when fatigue mounted. Airlines fought back by reducing the amount of sick leave available.

The warfare continues, now in court, as JetBlue, US Airways, Continental, American, and two cargo airlines, Evergreen and Atlas, have filed a lawsuit against the FAA to challenge the legality of new rules to provide better protection from fatigue on flights lasting sixteen hours or longer.

It is interesting to see JetBlue join this suit even though it has no flights of that length.

From Panic To Loving It Again

Dear Tom,

I just thought to write a few lines to thank you for your advice and  effective course. For two years, I was suffering from horrible panic attacks, anticipatory anxiety that was starting a week before a flight  and was totally dependent on tranquillizers. As I was flying for 25 years and I ABSOLUTELY loved traveling, these have wrecked my confidence while the panic attacks have also spread to other settings. Yesterday, for the first time I was able to fly from Athens to Brussels without experiencing all these horrible feelings. I have to admit that I took a Xanax but this was before the flight. I simply did not have enough faith that the horrible feelings would not suddenly manifest themselves. All the staff in Brussels Airlines were wonderful. The boarding assistants, the air stewardess, the captain. For me this experience was the best Christmas present!!!!

Thank you again for all the effort and time you put to create a program that truly helps people around the world.

My best Wishes for the New Year

More Protected When In The Air

You already know that you are more protected when flying than when in a car. But you may also be more protected from theft, American Airlines flight 1571 was met by police in Des Moines last Tuesday. A passenger was seen going through the purse of another passenger. Authorities were contacted by the pilots before landing. Police made an arrest when they found two credit cards and $12 in cash which had been stolen from the purse.

You can read about it at this link.
