First Flights After The SOAR Course
Hi Capt. Tom,
I have been back home for almost two weeks now. The morning of my departure, as I was driving to the airport at 4 AM, my legs were shaking so badly that I could hardly shift my car's gears. Immediately I started to do the 5-4-3-2-1. It took all my concentration and I had to do it for at least twenty minutes but it worked, it worked!
When we arrived at the airport my focus started to shift because of the business of checking in and checking baggage. My husband had to leave me at the baggage checking area, but it's almost as if I was preparing for battle and I needed to be alone. My mind was focused and I kept thinking about all I had learned.
I asked the woman at the ticket counter if I could board early to meet the captains. She was more than happy and so was I. When I got on they talked with me briefly, but that's all it took to feel a little better. The seat next to me was empty but on the aisle seat sat a man that looked unapproachable. I put my iPod on, fingers shaking and was trying to scroll through my "Take Me Along" and find the track that I needed to be on. By the time I found it it was time to takeoff. I just started talking to the man anyway and he turned out to be really nice and chatty.
During take off I focused on the conversation we were having and eventually said to him, "Are we in the air yet?" He replied, "Oh, we are way in the air!" At this point I felt a sense of completion. I chewed my gum like it was going out of style and the nausea I expected never came.
When I heard him announce it was time to land (it was only a 45 minute flight) I was thrilled and my new friend announced that landing was the worst part for him. I love landing! I navigated myself to the next gate for the next 4 1/2 hour flight. It took me a little longer to settle down on this flight. I made it safe and sound to my destination and teared up on the landing when I found myself across the country far away from the home I never thought I could leave.
It was liberating and beautiful and I feel as if many new doors are being opened in my life because of it. The way back home was a little more exciting when my drink went flying and people started screaming. The Captain came on and said "Sorry about that; didn't see that black cloud." When we got off the plane he was apologizing right and left to the passengers. My husband was amazed that I didn't freak out. I learned turbulence isn't dangerous, but I have to admit it was scary. I felt as if we were going to fall right out of the sky it shook so bad, but we landed safely and I have to say, Capt. Tom, the most valuable information that I took from all this was the 5-4-3-2-1.
That's when my "snowball" begins and when my anxiety starts to build and I can't shake it. Combined with prayer this course was amazing and I'm so thankful for it and the difference you have made in my life.

Meeting The Captain Helps
Dear Captain Tom,
I just wanted to let you know how I did on my recent flights. We had spoken in the weeks leading up to my trip, and I was experiencing a lot of anticipatory anxiety.
I already had "The Control Of Anxiety" for a while, but had never delved into them the way that I should have. So for this trip I was really trying to prepare myself in every way I could. I recently purchased the "Take Me Along" which helped a lot, as well as "At The Airport".
I also did something that I was very reluctant to do (because I feel ashamed and I'm shy) which was to meet the captain. That helped me a great deal, just like you said it would and I am so happy that I got up the nerve to do it because it really made me feel better. Whenever I got a little nervous, I would remember the conversation I had with the captain and I would feel more secure.
I was a little nervous during take-off and for some time after that. I think, because take-off scares me so much, it takes me a little while to recover. But after that, I was very relaxed and comfortable. I experienced some anticipatory anxiety before the flight home, and was a little more tense on the plane, but I did it and feel so much better about it.
I have realized that part of dealing with my fear is accepting that I may still have nerves, and that it's OK, but that I'll do fine in the long run. I also realized that I have to deal with this fear consistently and pro-actively and not just when I have an upcoming flight, so I made a promise to myself that I would stay active in your chat room/message board and order the rest of your program.
I want to thank you so much for all of your help and for allowing me to view the videos on-line after our phone session. Those really helped me leading up to the flight. Thanks again for everything, and I'll see you at the NY SOAR-Fest!

Note From Todd Curtiss' Newsletter
In his latest newsletter, Todd mentions that following the crash in 1987 at Detroit when a plane tried -- like the one in Madrid -- to take off without flaps -- the plane's manufacturer recommended the flap warning system be tested before every flight. Spainair's procedure is, according to reports, to check the system only once, on the first flight of the day. I'll bet attorneys of passengers killed on this flight are paying attention to this.
