Perfect Safety

Extremely remote possibilities do not bother most people. Knowing there is one accident every three to five million flights causes them little or no anxiety. But for others, anxiety persists if even the remotest possibility of disaster exists.

Why do some -- though they know flying is not absolutely safe -- fly with little or no anxiety? They fly comfortably due to a built-in ability to regulate emotional response. A person whose emotions are well-regulated within the mind can tolerate uncertainty. When emotions are well-regulated, control of internal emotion is not dependent upon complete control of ones external world.

When internal emotion is dependent upon complete control of ones external world, inevitably ones world must shrink -- and shrink again and again -- until the size of ones external world is small enough to absolutely control. This means agoraphobia, in which a person limits leaving home, then stays home, and then stays in one room.

Even then, even in one room, anxiety remains. In fact, even after ones world has shrunk that small, anxiety seems bigger than ever!

Good internal regulation allows a person to expand their world by making to face reasonable uncertainty and to take reasonable risks without undue emotional stress.

I suspect many people are sort of on the fence, pulled on one hand to expand their world, but pulled on the other hand toward agoraphobia. Though shrinking ones world may seem attractive, and though staying in ones comfort zone may seem wise, it isn't. Paradoxically, the more you shrink your world search for peace, the less peace you experience!

If you are on the fence, you need to understand that shrinking your world and maintaining your comfort zone is counterproductive; it leads to greater and greater distress. You need to bite the bullet and expand your world, It is only through expansion -- and through developing more internal regulation -- that peace and contentment can be achieved.

You, too, can gain good, built-in emotional regulation fly without undue stress. The key is to develop increased emotional strength. We have developed the means to give you increased emotional strength so that flying is not a problem.

A Husband Who Has Learned To Understand

Dear Captain Tom and SOAR students

My name is Bruce, I am the husband of Kathie. Kathie is a recent graduate from the SOAR program. I would like to share with you my experience from the other side of the fear factor.

Just recently Kathie and I took a trip to see our grandson in New Jersey and then to Florida to see my family. We had planned this out several months in advance; however Kathie has not been on a plane for twenty-six years. Her fear was tremendously high, I had no idea how high.

I know that she was looking for something that would help her when the time came to fly. For a person that is not afraid of flying a typically answer or comment would be, "You can do it", or "just get over it -- you're not afraid to fly". However; as time went by, I could see how it was affecting her physically and emotionally.

She shared with me that she was looking for a program online that might help her and she emailed me a couple of fear of flying sites to look at from work. I told her to find one then let me know. This is where she found the SOAR program. It looked like a very good program (I would find out later how good it was). I looked it over. Kathie had been emailing Capt. Tom, asking questions, etc. She was nervous but really wanted to take this trip and overcome her fear if it was at all possible.

So I knew that she had to have this, so I gave Capt. Tom a call to see what the best program was to get for Kathie.  Got them, downloaded them and away we went.

Let me step back for a moment. You see I really did not know how bad Kathie was feeling inside and I was not very supportive in the beginning, I am not afraid to fly. She would say, "Just once I wish you could get inside my body and feel what I am feeling, then you would know."

Husbands, if your wife is going through this and, wives, if your husband has a fear of flying, we need to be as supportive as possible. This is no joke on how they feel. I am an outgoing person, so I took that letter and I made sure Kathie got to see the pilot before takeoff, took pictures, etc. It was a lot of fun! I talked to her on the plane, held her hand, reminded her to use the 5-4-3-2-1, rubbed her back and made sure the iPod with Capt. Tom's program to listen to was on for her.

The important thing is that because of SOAR and Capt Tom's encouragement Kathie made it through six flights in two weeks. The boarding area was rough on her so she would call Capt. Tom and he would talk her through it.  I watched her as she walked onto her first flight in twenty-six years and as nervous as she was she met the pilots who were very encouraging. She did hold my hand when we took off and I rubbed her back through the turbulence on this flight. However the flight that meant the most to her was what she calls her "Achievement  Flight!" It was our fifth flight on our trip from Tampa to Salt Lake City. It was beyond packed, lines formed for the two bathrooms that were working, the turbulence lasted ninety-five percent of the flight, and this was a five-hour flight. She read her book, listened to music and remained calm. It was her "DEFINING MOMENT" when it comes to flying. Kathie is no longer afraid to fly and she talks with anyone who says they are afraid to fly sharing her experience with SOAR. Our last flight, which was to Seattle, was a piece of cake. Kathie graduated! Life is for living and flying fearless has set my wife free to soar!

I would like to take a moment to say a BIG THANK YOU to Capt. Tom for being there when she needed someone to talk too.

Sincerely

Bruce

Flying In The Cockpit

The New York Times just published a story about a passenger on a non-U.S. airline who was asked to fly in the cockpit because the flight was full. Even before 9/11, U.S. regulations did not allow passengers in the cockpit during flight. But at some non-U.S. airlines where regulations are different, a captain may invite a passenger to visit the cockpit during the flight.

A visit to the cockpit during flight is interesting. While the visit lasts, fear disappears. Yet, a cockpit visit seems to have no permanent effect on fear of flying. Fear temporarily disappears because reality -- what you see in the cockpit -- replaces imagination that something bad may be about to happen.

Fear goes away when you experience flying just as it is, adding nothing (by way of imagination) and subtracting nothing (by attempting to block the experience out). That is the goal of the SOAR Course. It is easy to have fear go away when you are in the cockpit. What we need to help you do is have fear go away when you are not in the cockpit, but in the cabin where imagination may run rampant.

People have trouble with flying -- not due to reality -- but due to imagination. Imagination causes the release of stress hormones which produce anxiety, fear and panic. Imagination is not easily controlled, so in the SOAR Course, we link imagination to a memory which -- because of the nature of the memory -- prevents the release of stress hormones which imagination would otherwise produce.
