Not One Second Of Anxiety

Hi Capt. Tom -- I have something great to share with you, though you won't be the least bit surprised.  On 2/15/08 I got on a Delta flight in Portland, Oregon, and flew to Atlanta.  It's a 5 hour flight that I have taken many times since you first worked with me and it's an easy, no stress trek.

But, then I did something that even that morning I wondered if I could manage.  I got on another plane, along with my husband, and flew to Prague!  It was a 10 hour flight and there was plenty of turbulence along the way.  And you know what?  I was absolutely fine.  I had not one second of anxiety and even slept peacefully for several hours!  We flew home last night and the flight between Atlanta and Portland was ghastly.  I found myself wondering if there wasn't smooth air at some altitude, but not because I was scared.  I was just concerned that there might be other people on the flight who were worried that the plane might come apart while taking what seemed like a terrible beating.

Again, I ate, read, slept, and relaxed.  Isn't that amazing?

My sincere thanks for giving me the freedom to fly across land and water to better see our world!

Knowing The Captain Has Children Helps, Too

Hi Tom,

I flew from LGA - Atlanta on AA very early AM on Feb 18.  When I got into the cockpit, the co-pilot immediately said to me, "let me show you something". He pulled out his planner and showed me a photo of a toddler. He said "this is my one daughter" and turned the page to reveal an infant and said "this is my other daughter". He assured me he wasn't leaving them and said that the flight would be fine. I knew it would be and it was an uneventful flight.

Coming back, my flight was delayed about 2 hours due to the plane arriving late from Dallas. A year ago, this would have bothered me to no end. But, since I added flight delays to my part 2 of the strengthening exercise, this didn't bother me at all. I wound up meeting one of my peers from another retailer at the airport and we had a nice networking lunch and then hung out in the Admiral's Club during the delay.

Once the plane took off, about 20 minutes into the flight, we hit really bad turbulence. The plane felt like it initially dropped a foot but I don't think it did. I did 2 things to calm myself: 1. I felt the up bump right after the down bump and told myself this was normal and 2. When the flight attendants were finally allowed to walk around the cabin, I got a cup of water and watched it. The water barely moved so I knew things weren't as bad as they seemed. While this was all going on, I was able to finish my book and then then take a nap! Again, had I not done the program, I never would have been able to calm myself down in-flight the way I did. Thank you!
