Why Anxiety Now?




In August I successfully flew after nearly eight years of avoiding air travel.  I practiced the strengthening exercise and did great.  Now, I have an upcoming trip. I did so well in August, so why are the old thoughts creeping back?  I noticed that about 10 days ago, I started to think about flying more and more.



You ask why you did well on the flight, and are not dealing well with anticipatory anxiety. Flight anxiety is controlled by the strengthening exercise, and the control takes place during that 1/10th of a second when thoughts being formed may trigger the amygdala to release stress hormones. We interfere with that so stress hormones are not released. This all happens before you are conscious of the thought.

 

But anticipatory anxiety involves thoughts that are already "assembled". The strengthening exercise can't do anything with a thought that is -- instead of being in the formation process -- already established in mind.

 

So you have to deal with it -- not automatically as with the strengthening exercise -- but manually by employing the 5-4-3-2-1. You can find it at:

 


 

The best way to approach this is to over-use the 5-4-3-2-1. Use it every five minutes, or every fifteen minutes to start with -- more than is necessary, and then back off and use it when you first notice any anxiety starting up.

 

And remember. The anxiety you feel now does not mean anything about your flight. The strengthening exercise will kick in as soon as you meet the captain.

Jet Blue Pilots May Form A Union




When choosing an airline, I have recommended the choice be one with a pilots' union. Airlines are businesses. The people who manage them intend to make money. When a captain sees the need for maintenance, management sees lost money because doing the maintenance may cause a delay or cancellation.

 

Regardless of what management says, they pressure pilots to be "team players" and help the airline make money. At a non-union airline, a pilot who gets the reputation of not being a "team player" by causing too many delays or cancellations can find his or her job canceled!

 

Even at union airlines, this pressure exists. But, at union airlines, the pilots are in a position to protect a pilot who does what the federal regulations mandate: refuse any plane that is not fully airworthy, or refuse to sign the paperwork for a flight saying it can be conducted safely when there is any question about safety at all.

 

If the pilots at JetBlue are successful in forming a union, it will help pilots resist management pressure and prevent safety from being compromised.

Determined To Get On That Plane -- And Did




Hi Tom




Your program is worth every cent in so many ways. I feel that most people could overcome their fears if they just really want to and practice your course like I did. Before I flew three years ago after your course I practice and practiced some more. I was determined I was going to get on a plane for the first time in my life. I did let "what ifs" get in my way, I was going to fly and I did. 




Maybe I am just more stubborn then some but, as I said, your course helps deal with other fears and lets me just face head on, what happens will happen. Chances are nothing bad will happen. If you take all the precautions you should in a situation, all should be just fine. This is what I learned most. Not to look at the negative side but prepare, and know I can be just fine no matter what I do. You gave me the courage to know I can do so many things. Still not looking over the Grand Canyon or something like that, but everyday things to make me function. I can now get them done instead of doubting myself or the situation with a bunch of "what ifs". Odd thing is, I meet people who are afraid to fly and won't get your course, they won't even try. That is sad; they are missing out on so much.




Anyway...I really should get back to work since my day is almost done anyway. I never thought I would overcome flying -- with my extreme fear of being in closed space -- but you helped me and for that you deserve lots praise.

Where Good "Mental Software" Comes From


A prospective client told me on Sunday that his father -- angry at his fear of flying -- told him to grow a set of balls. I told him to tell his father that if he wanted him to have balls he should have given him a different mother. I said this because I felt it was important for the client to understand that his panic attacks and inability to deal with feelings -- except when in control of the situation -- is not his fault. He was not given good "mental software" for regulating feelings.


Sons do not get balls from their father; they get balls from the mother. It is the mother who either establishes or sabotages the developing child's ability to deal with fear. If the mother does not have, within herself, the mental software to regulate her own feelings, she will not be able to download good software to her children.


But it isn't the mother's fault either; she got her software from her mother. Sometimes, as the new Control Of Anxiety 3 DVD explains, a mother can have good mental software, but be unable to download it because of circumstances. In the DVD, the circumstances were being born to parents during the Hungarian Revolution who were in the underground and feared for their lives during her early development. But there could be other circumstances. Most commonly, alcohol or other substance abuse in the family environment makes it impossible for good software to be passed on to a child.


Fortunately, we can fix that software. We haven't advertised SOAR as a way to grow balls, but that is what we do; we just find a more appropriate way to say it. We provide the mental software that does help you regulate emotions when flying. And, it does generalize; it does spread to help in other areas of life.
