WHAT WE IMAGINE; FLYING AFTER 25 YEARS
>html>
What We Imagine
One of our readers sent in this about the challenge of dealing with fear.
Back when I was in Boy Scouts and we started rock climbing, one of the
biggest fears that I had after putting on the harness and beginning the
climb was the fear of falling. It made every handhold and step upward
unnecessarily tense.
The best thing that happened early on in that
climb though was falling. Once I fell, I knew the worst thing that
would happen is the rope and my harness would catch me and I would hang
there with no harm done.
I developed confidence in the equipment and my
belay man. From that point onward the climb was much less tense and
much more fun. Periodically after that point at the beginning of a
climb I would intentionally fall just to rebuild that confidence and
remind myself of the worst case scenario.
I see somewhat of a parallel
to this and my flying anxiety. The plane -- as it goes through turbulence
-- is fine and the end consequence is nothing negative happens except in
our imagination.

An Email About Flying After 25 Years
I don't think you can imagine the seriousness of my fears...for some reason it has grown over the years to where I would actually drive to California rather than fly...I wanted to go to Europe and searched freighters to make the trip. I could barely say the word "Flight"without my heart racing.
But I must tell you that I have in the last week had a VERY successful trip to Charleston, thanks to the SOAR course. I cannot tell you how this fear has built up over 25 years, and when I got on the plane I was absolutely comfortable with the two take-offs and landings, and the same on my return.
Thank you so much for creating this course...I actually looked forward to the return trip and found the whole thing quite exciting...this would have been unheard of two months ago.

Tried Other Things But Without Much Success
Thanks for all the support and info you've sent. As many other testimonials have claimed, SOAR really does work.
I tried other things (Duane Brown's "Flying without Fear"; individual counseling) but without much success.
SOAR was diferent. My last flight was from Washington Dulles to Frankfurt, Germany round trip, and despite much anticipatory anxiety (you may recall that I called you from Dulles in a panic!) the flight itself was almost-anxiety free. I have a short flight coming up next week (DCA to Savannah, GA, with a stop in Atlanta) and am hoping that the surprising ease of my Frankfurt flight will keep anticipatory anxiety from getting too big.
I regularly mention SOAR to others as one of the few effective self-help programs I've come across. I wonder if you should write a book, I'd imagine it would really sell...
Many thanks,
