Last Week We Reported A New Way To Look At Turbulence

I asked that you conceive of the airplane as if it is a sort of zipper that, instead of JUST opening the matching pieces as it zips down, it opens them as it approaches them, and closes them as it leaves them behind.

Have you had a zipper with an imperfection in one of the matching pieces? If so, you know that when the zipper thingy ran into the imperfection, it caused a bump. But it didn't damage the zipper thingy.

The plane is built to handle those bumps, like your zipper thingy, without being in any way affected by it -- other than to feel the imperfections as it passes them.

So, I would just suggest you follow the airplane's lead and not care whether there is turbulence or not. The airplane is just a zipper that separates the air as it runs into it, and closes the air behind it as it leaves. And if the matching pieces have imperfections, it simply doesn't matter to the plane. There is a bump, but it means nothing whatsoever.

Now we have a report that it works: 'Hi Capt. Tom. It worked!! I thought of the zipper theory when we hit a tiny bump in the air.'

So think of three possibilities: 1. the smoothness of a Ziploc bag; 2. the rumble of a zipper opening and closing your jacket; and 3. the same thing but with some bumps in the zipper material. Why? Because air is, indeed, sometimes as smooth as zipping a Zipoc bag. Sometimes there are ripples like the ripples and vibrations on the zipper of your jacket. Sometimes it has ripples and bumps. Whichever way it is, it will not break the piece of the zipper that -- like your airplane -- moves.

Also Two Reports On Fast Track

First email: 'I did the fast track and my flights to Costa Rica were great a few weeks ago thanks to your program!'

Second email: I have flown all over the world, but in the recent 6 years I have been so AFRAID to fly. In the last year this fear got so bad that weeks prior to the flight I became a complete basket case. When I reach the gate and walk through the tunnel to the aircraft I start crying. I have actually freaked out after a take off and asked to get out. I could not breathe. They did not listen to me. We were 5,000 feet up in the air. A little late for that.

Last week, I was leaving for Las Vegas and my family wanted to fly. I paid for 4 tickets. However, even in the last minute I tried to convince my family to drive from San Francisco. No such luck. Luckily for me I watched your Fast Track Video online. I did the exercises and spoke with the Captain and Staff. THEY WERE WONDERFUL AND SO UNDERSTANDING!!!!!! They were happy to talk to me. It surely helps to know who is at the helm!!! The round trip flights were just fine. A little nervous but nothing like what I have been going through. What great advice! I will continue my exercises. The simulator is wonderful!!!!! I am going to Europe in the Summer. So, I've got some work to do. Once again, THANKS A MILLION!!!

Fast Track is the new program to provide the most help in the shortest period of time. It is intended for people who call at the last minute. But it is also a good way to get a quick overview of the program.

You can't lose. What you pay for Fast Track is 100% transferrable to the full course on CD or DVD.

Growing Trend Raises Air Safety and Security Concerns

The March 2007 issue of Consumer Reports includes a feature article titled, 'An accident waiting to happen? Outsourcing Raises Air-Safety Concerns.'

In the article, Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.), House transportation committee chairman, says that outsourced aircraft maintenance is 'not being done with the same oversight' as maintenance performed by airline employees. 'It's a recipe for failure,' he concludes.

Among the consumer research magazine's findings:

  • 'Airlines that outsource more tend to have more delays.'
  • 'Much of the [outsourced] work is being done by unlicensed mechanics.'
  • 'Arrests at some [outsourced] repair shops have snared terrorism suspects and undocumented workers [i.e., illegal aliens], who were subsequently deported.'
  • Outsourced aircraft repair shops 'are less subject to oversight than in-house [the airlines' own] shops, with fewer screening programs and fewer inspections...At the same time, the Federal Aviation Administration [FAA] is reducing actual inspections of airlines.'
  • A U.S. Department of Transportation report stated that 'the FAA never inspected approximately 1,400 noncertificated repair facilities, including 104 foreign facilities.'

What Can You Do?

Choose Your Airline Wisely

When considering airline travel, choose an airline with:

  • an established track record
  • a widely recognized brand name
  • a pilot's union
  • minimal outsourcing of maintenance

Why are these important?

  • With an established track record, statistics mean something. Since accidents happen rarely (only once in several million flights) it takes several millions of flights for statistics to reliably indicate a safety record due to commitment to safety rather than to luck.

  • A widely recognized brand name means an airline is likely to regard safety as more important than an airline that can easily afford to change its name after an accident.

  • Airline captains are in a position to know the condition of the airliner. He or she has access to the log book which records every bit of maintenance done to the plane.

At an airline with a pilot's union, captains are backed up by the union when they refuse an airliner that needs maintenance or refuse to ignore legal limits.

  • Mechanics employeed by an airline get passes for themselves and their family members. Self-preservation is a strong motivator to do good work. That motivation is lost when maintenance is outsourced.

Airlines Associated With ALPA, SWAPA or APA And With A Widely Recognized Brand Name

With two of the four criteria above established, the two variables are outsourcing rate and accident rate.

Listed in order of least outsourcing rate * followed by accident rate (number of accidents per million flights) **

But Keep This In Mind

Even though these trends are a concern, flying is still by far the safest way to travel. And since 5.4 miles of urban driving exposes you to the same risk of fatality as an airline flight (of whatever length) if your daily routine causes you to drive more than that, you are safer going on a flight than staying home.

What Else Can You Do?

This trend will not be reversed until there is political reason to reverse it. Generally, political will act on aviation matters only happens in reaction to an accident. If you would like the see this trend reversed prior to that, why not help by writing your representatives in congress?
